Fornace Fonti produces handmade terracotta both for antique floors as well as for their restoration. The production of floors and elements in terracotta for decoration purposes has accompanied the development of civilisation; its history has moved alongside the steps of the art of construction.
The symbolic and narrative function that the floor acquired through the centuries with the different techniques and materials, accompanies the fundamental function of these floors that are truly a work of art; that of consenting the maximum durability over time.
The artistic value of the floor was reflected in its economic value so much so that the price of the handiwork of the artisans became an object of control in the hands of the upper echelons of imperial power, who thought it necessary to secure the availability of labour at an affordable rate by imposing a ceiling price.
For the restoration of old floors, our products are indispensible to recreate the right ambience of the era which is so hard to replicate if not through a personalised product.
The handiwork, in fact, guarantees not just physically and mechanically superior features but confers superficial shades of colour which make the piece unique.
This uniqueness is conceived from the very first stages of production when the clay is mixed in a way that the handmade tile is more porous, increasing in the drying phase until finally arriving at the long kilning phase taking it to a level of over 1000 degrees Celcius with the aim of making it frost-proof.
Once affixed the terracotta can take on various tones and colour effects with a special treatment that also guarantees the durability of the floor.
On request we supply also sanded, semi-smooth finish or smooth-finish terracotta so that the tile is more uniform in colour and easier to clean.
Besides the supply of ceramics, the company also offers its clients the opportunity to use its superior services in transportation, affixing and treatment.
Installation:
This is normally carried out using glue. The use of âglue for thick earthenware â allows for the small differences in height of the elements.
For best visual effect it is advisable to mix the contents of various packs.
If the material to be fixed is not rectified it is advisable to fix maintaining 4/5mm of distance between each element.
A dry trial is advisable before starting work to plan the layout and the texture of the floor.
Notes on Supply:
Every single piece of the floor is delivered with small differences in colour tone and dimension to give a unique finish.This is because in antique floors one does not find uniformity in the floor pieces.
Treatment:
When the floor is dry and clean the final treatment may be applied. Given the particular absorption characteristics of hand crafted terracotta it is fundamental that the treatment be carried out by professionals using quality products and who are knowledgeable about the timing and method of application.
Maintenance:
For ordinary cleaning dilute half a cupful of neutral non-foamy detergent in a bucketful of water of approximately 10 litres, wipe with a cotton cloth ( dipped in the solution and wrung) to obtain the required cleanliness. It is advisable to add a measure of product in the rinsing water.
It is advisable to collect excess dirt and dust using a vacuum cleaner before washing.
Warnings:
There are several cleaning products available on the market used for floors and surfaces, however in order to protect your terracotta floor we advise against using any of the following:
⢠Washing with alkaline detergents such as bleach, caustic soda, and ammonia.
⢠Washing with acids such as hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid etc.
⢠Washing with solvents such as acetone, turpentine etc.
⢠Steam washing ( 100 degrees)
⢠Plant pots and flowers in vases in direct contact with the floor: in extended contact with the floor they leave rings and marks caused by the oxidation of the surfaces which are not aired.
⢠Therefore we recommend the use of holders for pots and vases with some millimetres of felt on their bases.
